Secure Encryption for Data Security is Fundamental to Dakota Backup's Off-Site Data Protection Services.

  • Asigra Cloud Backup is Federal Information Processing Standards 140-2 (FIPS 104-2) validated for AES Encryption, Random Number Generator, Digital Signatures, and HMAC.  FIPS is a US federal standard for governmental agencies and is specifically called out in HIPAA regulations.
  • Data in Transit: All data is encrypted inline at the customer’s facility within the software ensuring secure data transmission to our Online Storage Systems.
  • Data at Rest: All data remains encrypted as it resides on the Online Storage Systems.  Access to file content is not possible.
  • Each installation of the client software creates a ‘Digital Signature Key’ once it registers with the Online Storage Systems.  This Hardware Key is used in conjunction with the Encryption Keys to ensure data confidentiality when accessing data for backup or restore procedures.  Data can be restored only by the original software client that backed it up.
  • Customers are able to manage the Encryption Keys themselves or allow the software to forward an encrypted copy to the Online Storage Systems for safeguarding.

Encryption Types & Triplicate Keys

  • AES 128-bit requires a 16-character key
  • AES 192-bit requires a 24-character key
  • AES 256-bit requires a 32-character key
  • A hardware based Digital Signature Key unique to each software installation
  • A Private Encryption Key is provided by the customer at installation and is used to encrypt all files except common files for a particular customer account.
  • An Account Encryption Key is also provided by the customer at installation and is used to handle common files within a particular customer account.

Encryption Key Validation & Encryption Security

  • To ensure that Dakota Backup Client continues to use the same Private Encryption Key and Account Encryption Key at all times, the client software also verifies key integrity on every connection to the Online Storage Systems.
  • The client software stores all authentication passwords that give access to the source computers in encrypted format and both client software encryption keys are stored in encrypted format in the software database.

The Result of these Data Security Mechanisms:

  • Even a person with legitimate access to the system (such as the administrator) cannot discover the values of the encryption keys.
  • If the customer’s machine is compromised (a hacker gains access to the computer), the passwords the client software uses to access the source systems and Encryption Keys are not jeopardized.
